Silent Sports

The Northwoods of Wisconsin is the perfect location for you to enjoy all types of silent sports.  Kayakers and Canoers will find pristine lakes and great streams to enjoy, really too many to count.   If you’re a bike enthusiast you’ve already seen from our Biking page that there are an abundance of bike trails in the area.   And the hiking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities are boundless as well.   Below you’ll find just a sampling of the too many to count opportunities that are available in the Northwoods of Wisconsin for enjoying silent sports.   Any of our beautiful vacation rental properties would be a perfect home base for a silent sport filled vacation.

 

Kayaking / Canoeing

Whether it’s the 19000 acre Turtle Flambeau Flowage or the 1300 lakes and 73 streams that are located in both Iron and Vilas Counties, you will never be far from a place to Kayak or Canoe.

A great padding option is the Manitowish River.   This river starts just north and east of Boulder Junction, flows through the Manitowish Chain of lakes and finally empties into the Turtle Flambeau Flowage.  You can enjoy multiple day trips either individually or knitted together to traverse the entire river.   Check out the four paddling itineraries that combined will have you paddling the entire Manitowish River and ending in the expansive Turtle Flambeau Flowage:

Hiking

Truth be told, you can probably make your own trail and adventure.   But, there are so many great hiking locations in the area why not enjoy one that’s made for the adventure you’re seeking!

The Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area covers           In this Wilderness Area there are a number of hiking loops  from 2.8 miles long to 5.3 miles long where you’ll be able to explore this untouched corner of the Northwoods of Wisconsin.   Feel free to bring the pupper along as dogs are allowed and they must be on-leash from April 1 – July 31 to protect ground nesting birds (how cool!).  Click HERE to check out the trails available in this amazing Wilderness Area.

A uniquely northwoods hiking experience is waiting for you at the Van Vliet Hemlocks Trails.   These trails are surrounded by old growth hemlocks that are a rare remnant of the northern hardwood-hemlock forest which was once the most common forest in Northern Wisconsin.   You’ll find a variety of trails here from hilly, to lakeside to deep into the old growth hemlock forest.   Click HERE to check out the trails available for you to enjoy these old growth giants.
